The Mayor of Newport to Officially Open the 2026 Newport Chess Congress 

We are deeply honoured to announce that the Mayor of Newport will attend the Newport Chess Congress to officially open this year’s landmark tournament. 

Running from August 21st to August 23rd at the historic Lysaght Institute, the congress welcomes players from all over the UK to compete across three FIDE-rated sections. The Mayor’s attendance highlights the city’s proud support for local sports, community engagement, and competitive chess. 

The Mayor and Consort are due to arrive at 6:20 PM. All players and spectators are kindly requested to gather in the Ballroom ahead of time and to stand as we welcome the Mayor to the venue. 

The Opening Ceremony will begin promptly at 6:30 PM on Friday evening, featuring the Mayor playing the traditional first move. This will be followed immediately by the first round of matches. Spectators and participants alike can look forward to an inspiring weekend of brilliant tactics and fierce concentration.
